While the cat is away the mice will play….

No Baking Papa was left to his own devices for a week this month while I was off goofing around on Maui.  When I am away he tends to return to his roots.  He may not know how to bake or cook but he does know chili fries and our allrecipes sponsor Ore Ida made him VERY happy.
When Allrecipes came to me in October with Ore Ida and Johnsonville sausage as sponsors I wasn’t quite sure how to handle this assignment.  You see, I was doing “October – Unprocessed”.   Notice I said, “I was doing….”  No Baking Papa was not totally onboard.

Chili FriesI avoid the freezer case at the market but No Baking Papa knows his fries and he also knows that Ore Ida are top notch.   He was grinning ear to ear as I waved goodbye.  He saw a week of Chili Fries of his college days in his future.

Tater Tots and hot dogsWhile I was gone NB Papa discovered the convection setting on the oven – this opened up a whole new world, Fries in half the time and with the use of parchment paper (which I left a hefty supply of, to protect my sheet pans) clean-up would be a breeze!

I left him with a recipe for ‘Johnsonville One Pot Italian’ and had even measured out 8 oz of the pasta (they don’t come packaged that way and I knew he wouldn’t even notice)  with 4 ingredients, one of which is water, I figured he could handle this.
BTW, I did leave him paper plates and bowls but I failed to purchase disposable silverware.

So the week went by and we were both ready for a return to reality.

As much fun as he had being back to the life of a college student, living on chili fries, I think he overdosed on Chili Fries and his new invention “Chili Tater Tots”

Thanks for your “help” NB Papa – I couldn’t have done October without you!

About Baking Nana

Each morning my granddaughter Sarah calls to ask, "Watcha doing, Nana? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my "name" Baking Nana. I am a mother to three wonderful children and a grandmother to 12 very hungry grandkids. I don't bake fancy cakes but I do make wonderful yeast bread and home cooked meals made with love.

  1. OMGarsh! Not sure how I missed this before . . . but I was going to check out the recipe for braised cabbage, when the picture of that glorious Hawaiian ginger caught my eye and I had to take a look. I have had the worst craving for tator tots, recently – not sure why – haven’t had them in a while . . . I was thinking I might have to break down and eat at Sonic, but maybe I should just lunch with NBP some day to quench my craving 😉 He can have my ketchup, though (=

    • Hi Barb – the way I see it, NB Papa will be soon ready to send me on another trip – he hasn’t seen Tater Tots since last year.
If I play my cards right, I could get another trip or two out of this!

  2. I’m one of the lucky ones, my husband actually will cook for himself when I’m away with no coaxing from me. You may want to bring NBP on board as a “SubRep-Ambassador.” And he’s pretty darn good with a camera, too.

    • You are one of the lucky one, Pat. NB Papa is pretty good with the camera, if only he would have been brave enough to take the food outside. Fearing odd looks from the neighbors he opted for indoor, low light pics. That’s OK – he came through for me!

  3. Lucky you, Baking Nana! Even with “heat ‘n’ eat” foods in the fridge, my guy gets take-out when I’m gone, lol!

  4. Ore-Ida and I go a long way back! I love your blog! Love it all. I think he was lucky to have you to provide for him while you were out playing around!

  5. lmao, What a great blog. Love those recipics especially the dogs and fries. I can just see NBP grinning from ear to ear. Great photos NBP!
