Baked Onion Rings

Don’t you just love onion rings?  We do!

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I am anti-fast food, however I am married to No Baking Papa and he isn’t always on board about this.  I also don’t like to fry.  Beside the mess involved with frying anything, the cost in calories is staggering.

I was excited to give Chef John’s recipe for Oven Baked Onion Rings a try.  There are a couple of tricks that make these work.

  • Panko crumbs make a huge difference in the crunch factor.
  • Baking at 450° and using the convection setting really helps to form a crispy crust.
  • Although Chef John doesn’t have you season the flour, egg whites and panko crumbs, I did add seasoning and I think that added a lot to the overall flavor.
  • I lined my sheet pan with parchment paper, well sprayed with cooking spray.   It makes for a very easy clean up!

I would give these 5 stars.
No Baking Papa gave them 4 stars, stating, “If I can’t have fried, these will do.”
Mind you, he didn’t leave any on the plate so I think he liked them more than he let on.

  1. Thank you for this recipe. I love onion rings, but really can’t eat fried foods at all. So, I see these in my future.
